The sixth grade class at St. Helen did a project based on the parable of the talents from Matthew.  The teachers gave each of their students $1 from their own pockets.  The students had two weeks to decide what they were going to do with the $1.  They voted on a charity: The Blue Star Mothers of America Miami Valley Chapter #3.  After the two weeks were up they were required to write a three paragraph report on what they chose to do with their dollar, why they chose what they did with their dollar and how they felt about the experience.  46 students in the two classes participated.  There were a few who gave their dollar back but in the span of the two weeks the majority of the students raised $916.50.

The Blue Star Mothers are near and dear to the hearts of these sixth graders as several are military kids, including one that was surprised last year at her brother’s basketball game by her military Mom being escorted into the gym just prior to the game.  The children had no idea that Mom was coming home a month early.  The students were all at the game that day to show support.

St. Helen Elementary has supported Blue Star Mothers two other times this year as a school with a fund raiser and a donation drive. Blue Star Mothers Miami Valley Chapter #3 extends our gratitude to these outstanding students and teachers, not only for their help with our mission supporting the military, but also for fostering community charitable support combined with patriotism in creative ways.
